Pastoral Care Sessions

Key Points

  • Teachers are connecting with small groups of students in a time allocated each Thursday for a pastoral care session to help monitor individual progress and lead students through activities that will aid them in planning for ongoing success and improvement.
  • This week, our first pastoral care session was run with all students in years 7 through to 10 to look back and reflect on their weekly progress summary.

During remote learning in 2021, our teachers and support staff checked in on each student individually through phone calls on a weekly basis.  Almost 9000 calls were logged as part of that check-in program which assisted in keeping us connected during remote. Upon return to school, our teachers caught up with most students as part of the wellbeing return to school strategy.

The check-ins during remote and upon immediate return engaged parents and students in conversation about

  • Progress and confidence with school work

  • Sense of motivation, organisation and self-regulation

  • Student general wellbeing and welfare

With positive experiences and impact with an individual care program for students, we are now looking to emulate a similar approach during the school year, where teachers provide pastoral care support to students through pastoral care sessions focused on:

  • Engagement at school

  • Socially responsible behaviours

  • Engagement and motivation with studies

  • Overall success through establishing individual targets and strategies to achieve and measure those targets.

Through the allocation of a small group of students to each teacher across the school, our teachers will develop a deeper insight and understanding of their small group of students and be able to deliver and support students across these areas with both their academic and wellbeing needs.

This first session was very well received and so readily undertaken by all students, with teachers and students reporting the positive opportunity to connect with each other to discuss their individual journey at school. The program of pastoral care in term 4 will provide the insight and ideas that help us launch 2022 with a strong care and support program for all students from the beginning of next year.
